The houses with a steep roof (Gassho-style houses) in Shirakawa-go (Shirakawa village in Gifu prefecture) and Gokayama (Toyama prefecture) historical villages were listed as a World Heritage site in 1995. Because the area experiences heavy snowfall during winter, Gassho style houses have sharp roof so that snow can slip off from the roof and prevent the house from being crushed by its weight.
